Special economic and humanitarian assistance

In 1993, the United Nations continued to respond to the escalation of complex emergencies and humanitarian situations worldwide. The Economic and Social Council considered the coordination of humanitarian assistance and adopted recommendations to strengthen delivery. The General Assembly endorsed those conclusions and emphasized the leadership role of the Secretary-General, through the Emergency Relief Coordinator, in coordinating coherent and timely responses to humanitarian emergencies. It requested the Inter-Agency Standing Committee to ensure the availability of adequate resources for rapid and coordinated responses (resolution 48/57).
