The Yearbook of the United Nations stands as the authoritative reference work on the activities and concerns of the Organization. Based on official UN documents, the Yearbook provides comprehensive coverage of political and security matters, human rights issues, economic and social questions, legal issues, and institutional, administrative and budgetary matters.

The United Nations in 1994 continued to implement the 1985 Nairobi Forward-looking Strategies for the Advancement of Women—a set of measures to overcome obstacles to the goals and objectives of the United Nations Decade for Women (1976-1985)—while undertaking preparations for the Fourth World Conference on Women: Action, Equality and Peace (1995, Beijing) which aimed at reviewing and appraising progress achieved in implementing the Strategies.
