Journeying into uncharted territory, the United Nations in 1994 encountered new global challenges. Regional and ethnic conflicts and crimes against humanity haunted the world community. Although effective means remain to be found for putting a permanent end to such atrocities, the world Organization continued to work to resolve crises and to alleviate human suffering in new and desperate situations.
