World Trade Organization (WTO) and the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT)

With the conclusion, after more than seven years of discussions, of the Uruguay Round of multilateral trade negotiations and the signing of the Marrakesh (Morocco) Declaration in April 1994,a the World Trade Organization (WTO) came into being on 1 January 1995 as the successor to the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT). WTO and GATT co-existed throughout 1995 in order to allow sufficient time for all Governments to join the new Organization. The rules of the original GATT became an integral part of WTO and, along with their various amendments, were known as GATT 1994.
