The Yearbook of the United Nations stands as the authoritative reference work on the activities and concerns of the Organization. Based on official UN documents, the Yearbook provides comprehensive coverage of political and security matters, human rights issues, economic and social questions, legal issues, and institutional, administrative and budgetary matters.

Humanitarian and special economic assistance

In 1996, the international community continued to respond to major humanitarian emergencies—notably in the Great Lakes region of Africa and countries of the former Yugoslavia, as well as Angola, Liberia, the Sudan, Afghanistan and Iraq. Devastating natural disasters affecting countries in all parts of the world were also the focus of UN attention and aid.
