International trade, finance and transport

International trade grew very slowly in the first half of 1999, with significant declines in some regions as many economies, especially in Asia and Latin America but also among the economies in transition, continued their adjustment to the 1997 Asian crisis and its aftermath by cutting import demand. However, as the recovery strengthened and more economies began to move towards positive growth, trade began to rebound, rather strongly in the second half of the year.
