Matale is a medium-sized town in central Sri Lanka, with an annual population growth rate of 1.5 per cent in 2015. The city is surrounded by large plantations and is famous for its spice gardens. In addition to agriculture, the citys main economic activities include tourism and trade. Population growth, urban expansion and economic development in Matale have created regulatory and management challenges. The citys development plan tends to be partially implemented, in part due to limited technical capacity among government officers.
