Disability at a Glance 2023
The private sector has a pivotal role to play in accelerating disability-inclusive sustainable development. Mainstreaming disability inclusion into every aspect of business presents opportunities for companies to improve workplace accessibility strengthen performance encourage innovation and expand to new consumer markets and untapped talent pools. Study findings have shown a positive correlation between the financial performance of companies and their status of disability inclusion with higher sales profit margins and shareholder returns for companies championing disability inclusion. Based on the analysis of the current status and advancements it recommends actions that Governments businesses and other stakeholders can undertake to advance the promotion of disability-inclusive business.

Disability-inclusive employment has yet to be achieved in the Asia-Pacific region home to 472 million working-age persons with disabilities. Employment data concerning persons with disabilities are scarce across countries in the region. Where such data do exist persons with disabilities - especially women youth and rural habitants among them - are found to fare worse than those without in the labor market. Disability at a Glance 2021: The Shaping of Disability-inclusive Employment in Asia and the Pacific seeks to equip ESCAP members and associate members with updated information and insights on promoting employment for persons with disabilities in the region through snapshots of the latest figures trends policy developments and inspirational practices.

Persons with disabilities face numerous barriers that restrict their full and effective participation in society on an equal basis with others. This publication illustrates the need for increased investment in accessibility and lays out foundational concepts and terminologies related to disability and accessibility provides an understanding of the key areas in which to invest in order to promote accessibility and examines the drivers for governments and other stakeholders to invest in accessibility. It also analyzes the status of disability-inclusive development and accessibility investment across the region and presents case studies and good practices of investing in accessibility.

The publication provides a snapshot of disability statistics and information in the region particularly with regards to the population of persons with disabilities the definition of disability and national policy programmes and institutional mechanisms on disability matters. The compilation serves as a point of reference whereby Governments researchers organizations of persons with disabilities and other stakeholders are encouraged to take further action to enhance their data collection efforts and create an inclusive barrier-free and rights-based society.

The Asian and Pacific Decade of Disabled Persons started with the premise of promoting a paradigm shift from a welfare-based to a rights-based approach towards disability. The current publication aims to provide disability-related data and policy-related information so that readers are able to see in detail how a particular country or area defines disability and collects related statistics and implements the Biwako Millennium Framework for Action towards an Inclusive Barrier-free and Rights-based Society for Persons with Disabilities in Asia and the Pacific in particular with regard to the establishment of a relevant institutional framework and policies.
