Biological and chemical weapons

During the year, in accordance with the decisions and recommendations adopted at the Sixth Review Conference held in 2006, the States parties to the Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production and Stockpiling of Bacteriological (Biological) and Toxin Weapons and on their Destruction, also known as the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC), successfully concluded the intersessional process leading to the Seventh Review Conference to be held in 2011. Through the process, the States parties aimed to promote strengthening of the Convention’s implementation and to reduce the risks to global security posed by biological weapons and bioterrorism. In particular, they produced common understandings that could serve as the basis for a wide range of national, regional and international actions. The States parties will consider how to build upon this work at the Seventh Review Conference, which could provide the opportunity to reach significant agreements on the Convention’s future.
