The role of nuclear-weapon-free zones (NWFZ) in promoting and facilitating progress towards a nuclear-weapon-free world received considerable attention in 2010. The entry into force in 2009 of the African and Central Asian NWFZs led to follow-up efforts in winning the support of the nuclear-weapon States for the protocols attached to NWFZ treaties. This also resulted in enhanced regional cooperation on the peaceful use of nuclear energy, as well as to ensure the safety of NWFZs against hazardous nuclear materials.
