Sixty-five years after the first and only use of atomic bombs, nuclear weapons continue to be a key element of the national security policies of a few states. Almost 20 years after the end of the Cold War, there remain “approximately 23,360 nuclear weapons located at some 111 sites in 14 countries. Nearly one-half of these weapons are active or operationally deployed”.
