Annuaire démographique (Ser. R)
The United Nations Demographic Yearbook collects, compiles and disseminates official statistics on a wide range of topics. Data have been collected from national statistical authorities since 1948 through a set of questionnaires dispatched annually by the United Nations Statistics Division to over 230 national statistical offices. The Demographic Yearbook disseminates statistics on population size and composition, births, deaths, marriage and divorce on an annual basis. Demographic Yearbook special topics issues cover a wide range of additional topics including economic activity, educational attainment, household characteristics, housing, ethnicity and language, among others.

This is the eleventh in the series of Demographic Yearbooks assembled and published since 1948 by the Statistical Office of the United Nations from official statistics generously made available by national statistical authorities. The special topic this year is natality statistics previously featured in the issues of 1949-50 and 1954. Together the three volumes provide historical series of natality statistics back to 1935. Migration statistics are also included in the 1959 issue in accordance with the biennial plan of presentation; they were last shown in the 1957 Yearbook.

The 1956 Demographic Yearbook is the 8th in the series published by the Statistical Office of the United Nations. To complete the presentation of results of population censuses carried out between 1945 and 1955 this-like the 1955 issue-is a census reference volume. However in this issue particular attention is paid to ethnic and economic characteristics of the population whereas the 1955 Yearbook covered chiefly geographic distribution statistics of detailed age marital status literacy and measures of fertility.

The Economic and Social Council at its fourth session 28 February to 29 March 1947 recommended that the United Nations publish "a demographic yearbook containing regular series of basic demographic statistics comparable within and among themselves and relevant calculations of comparable rates." This action of the Economic and Social Council stemmed from the report of the first session of the Statistical Commission which had recommended that "demographic data concerning the different countries of the world be assembled and published by the United Nations" and from the report of the first session of the Population Commission which had stated its belief that "the regular provision of accurate comparable and comprehensive statistical and other data concerning populations and population movements is of the greatest importance to the United Nations and to the specialized agencies" and recommended that there be authorized ". . . in addition to any inclusion of population statistics in general annual or other periodic publications of the United Nations the publication by the Secretary General of a demographic yearbook."
