The Sustainable Development Goals Report 2023: Special Edition provides a powerful call to action, presenting a candid assessment of the SDGs based on the latest data and estimates. While highlighting the existing gaps and urging the world to redouble its efforts, the report also emphasizes the immense potential for success through strong political will and the utilization of available technologies, resources, and knowledge. Together, the global community can reignite progress towards achieving the SDGs and create a brighter future for all. According to the report, the impacts of the climate crisis, the war in Ukraine, a weak global economy, and the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic have revealed weaknesses and hindered progress towards the Goals. The report further warns that while lack of progress is universal, it is the world’s poorest and most vulnerable who are experiencing the worst effects of these unprecedented global challenges. It also points out areas that need urgent action to rescue the SDGs and deliver meaningful progress for people and the planet by 2030.

World Social Report 2024
Social Development in Times of Converging Crises: A Call for Global Action
The nature of crises has been transformed significantly in recent years. Shocks have become more intense, widespread, and interlinked. Extreme weather events happen with increasing frequency and ferocity; economic, financial, social, and health shocks quickly spread around the world; conflict and insecurity are a daily reality for millions. The combined effect of more numerous and more powerful shocks, denser interconnections, and existing shortfalls creates a daunting challenge to social development in countries, already struggling to make significant progress on the Sustainable Development Goals.

The multi-stakeholder High-level Advisory Body on Artificial Intelligence, initially proposed in 2020 as part of the United Nations Secretary-General’s Roadmap for Digital Cooperation (A/74/821), was formed in October 2023 to undertake analysis and advance recommendations for the international governance of artificial intelligence. Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming our world. This suite of technologies offers tremendous potential for good, from opening new areas of scientific inquiry and optimizing energy grids, to improving public health and agriculture and promoting broader progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Left ungoverned, however, AI’s opportunities may not manifest or be distributed equitably. Widening digital divides could limit the benefits of AI to a handful of States, companies and individuals. Missed uses – failing to take advantage of and share AI-related benefits because of lack of trust or missing enablers such as capacity gaps and ineffective governance – could limit the opportunity envelope. Accountability requires implementation so that commitments to global AI governance translate to tangible outcomes in practice, including on capacity development and support to small and medium enterprises, so that opportunities are shared. Much of this will take place at the national and regional levels, but more is also needed globally to address risks and harness benefits.

Reporting Under the Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment
Training Guide (Part I – Manual)
The manual is aimed at assisting States parties in fulfilling their reporting obligations under the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment. Its objective is to facilitate understanding of the rights enshrined in the Convention and the corresponding obligations of the States parties in respecting, protecting and fulfilling those rights. The manual is based on the provisions of the Convention, the general comments of the Committee against Torture, its jurisprudence on individual communications and its concluding observations on State party’s initial and periodic reports, as well as its reporting guidelines, rules of procedure, working methods and other documents. The manual should be seen as a practical tool, while bearing in mind the constantly developing practice of the Committee in interpreting the Convention. The present manual also constitutes a reference document for trainers who intend to design and deliver training courses on reporting to the Committee on the implementation of the provisions of the Convention. The manual can be used jointly with the training guide on reporting to the United Nations treaty bodies, which covers all the procedural aspects of the reporting process.

United Nations Global Principles for Information Integrity
Recommendations for Multi-stakeholder Action
Technological advances have revolutionized communications, connecting people on a previously unthinkable scale. They have supported communities in times of crisis, elevated marginalized voices and helped mobilize global movements for racial justice and gender equality. Yet these same advances have enabled the spread of misinformation, disinformation and hate speech at an unprecedented volume, velocity and virality, risking the integrity of the information ecosystem. New and escalating risks stemming from leaps in AI technologies have made strengthening information integrity one of the urgent tasks of our time. This clear and present global threat demands coordinated international action. The United Nations Global Principles for Information Integrity show us another future is possible.

Sustainability Integration by Public Pension and Sovereign Wealth Funds, 2022
This study examines ESG and sustainability integration in the investment practices of the world’s 100 largest public pension funds (PPFs) and sovereign wealth funds (SWFs), accounting for $22 trillion in assets under management (AUM). PPFs and SWFs have long-term obligations and investment horizons. This puts them in a unique position to contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and take action on sustainability risks, especially climate change. By reviewing the sustainability reporting of 47 ‘frontrunner’ funds, this study identifies a rich pool of good practices for sustainability integration in six strategic areas: governance, corporate sustainable investment policies, sustainability integration strategies, ESG integration along the investment chain, climate action, and evaluation and reporting. The findings of the report and best practice cases will also contribute to UNCTAD guidance on sustainability integration for institutional investors, with a particular relevance for developing countries.
Progress on the Sustainable Development Goals: A Gender Snapshot of the Arab Region 2024
Progress on the Sustainable Development Goals: A Gender Snapshot of the Arab Region 2024 provides a comprehensive analysis of gender equality across the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), examining the Arab region’s progress, challenges and setbacks in achieving gender parity by 2030. Despite notable advances in education, health and essential services, critical disparities persist in employment, economic empowerment and the prevalence of violence and conflict, slowing progress towards gender equality. This report, jointly published by UN Women and UN ESCWA, underscores the pivotal role of gender equality in driving SDG achievements and highlights the centrality of women and girls in shaping sustainable futures. It also addresses the interconnections between the SDGs, providing regional and subregional evidence of both progress and persistent inequalities. A key focus is the importance of sex-disaggregated data, particularly from administrative sources and specialized gender surveys, which remain limited in the region. By emphasizing the urgent need for comprehensive gender-related data, the report offers strategic policy recommendations aligned with the Beijing Platform for Action, calling for concrete governmental action to close the gender gap and advance women’s empowerment.

Human Development Report 2025
A Matter of Choice: People and Possibilities in the Age of AI
Artificial intelligence (AI) has broken into a dizzying gallop. While AI feats grab headlines, they privilege technology in a make-believe vacuum, obscuring what really matters: people’s choices. The choices that people have and can realize, within ever expanding freedoms, are essential to human development, whose goal is for people to live lives they value and have reason to value. A world with AI is flush with choices the exercise of which is both a matter of human development and a means to advance it. Going forward, development depends less on what AI can do—not on how human-like it is perceived to be—and more on mobilizing people’s imaginations to reshape economies and societies to make the most of it. Instead of trying vainly to predict what will happen, this year’s Human Development Report asks what choices can be made so that new development pathways for all countries dot the horizon, helping everyone have a shot at thriving in a world with AI.
