State of World Population 1999
6 Billion - A Time for Choices
Women are having fewer children than ever before, and population growth has slowed from 2.0 to 1.3 percent in 30 years; but large families in the recent past mean that there are many more women of childbearing age. Global population is still rising by about 78 million people a year. Half the world is under 25 and there are over a billion young people between 15 and 24, the parents of the next generation. The State of World Population 1999 highlights the critical decisions facing the international community as the world population passed the 6 billion mark in October 1999. How fast the next billion people are added, the effect on natural resources and the environment, and the quality of life will depend on policy and funding decisions taken in the next 5 to 10 years, according to this 1999 report.

Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security
The Paris Agreement, adopted in December 2015, represents a new beginning in the global effort to stabilize the climate before it is too late. It recognizes the importance of food security in the international response to climate change, as reflected by many countries focusing prominently on the agriculture sector in their planned contributions to adaptation and mitigation. To help put those plans into action, this report identifies strategies, financing opportunities, and data and information needs. It also describes transformative policies and institutions that can overcome barriers to implementation.

It is expected to improve valuation efforts and help ensure the better use of such values in policymaking and decision making.
Trade and Human Development
A Practical Guide to Mainstreaming Trade
Nearly four billion people live on $2 a day or less. More than a billion of them live in extreme poverty, subsisting on less than $1.25 a day. Since 2003, world trade expanded at an average annual rate of 16 per cent, before collapsing as a result of the global economic crisis in 2009. Despite the growth, the benefits of trade are still unequally distributed both within and across countries. For example in 2009, three countries accounted for 40 per cent of world merchandise exports while the 48 least developed countries accounted for less than one per cent. This publication discusses the dynamics of trade mainstreaming in developing countries by drawing on the experience of 14 case studies. The objective is to look more closely at the context in which trade mainstreaming occurs, and to identify the common elements of success in mainstreaming trade in national development strategies.
Reshaping Cultural Policies
Advancing Creativity for Development
The Global Report series has been designed to monitor the implementation of the UNESCO Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions (2005). It also provides evidence of how this implementation process contributes to attaining the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Goals and targets. The 2018 Global Report analyses progress achieved in implementing the 2005 Convention since the first Global Report was published in 2015. Grounded in the analysis of the Quadrennial Periodic Reports submitted by Parties to the Convention and relevant new findings, this report examines how the 2005 Convention has inspired policy change at the global and country level in ten areas of monitoring. It puts forward a set of policy recommendations for the future, addressing the adaptation of cultural policies to rapid change in the digital environment, based on human rights and fundamental freedoms. When deployed together, the two editions of the Global Report are beginning to produce new and valuable evidence to inform cultural policy making and advance creativity for development.

The State of Food and Agriculture 2005
Agriculture Trade and Poverty - Can Trade Work for the Poor?
The report examines the many ways in which trade liberalization and agricultural trade affect the poor and food-insecure. Trade can be a catalyst for change, promoting conditions that enable the poor to raise their incomes and live longer, healthier and more productive lives, but these positive results are not guaranteed. The poor are particularly vulnerable in any reform process, especially in the short run as productive sectors and labour markets adjust. Complementary policy measures are needed to enable the poor to take advantage of the opportunities offered by trade, and safety nets are required to protect the most vulnerable from trade-related shocks.

Building the Future
Children and the Sustainable Development Goals in Rich Countries
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) agreed by the international community in 2015 represent an ambitious effort to set a global agenda for development that is both equitable and sustainable, in social, economic and environmental terms. The earlier Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) prioritized the reduction of poverty, as well as progress in related social indicators. The 17 goals of the SDGs add to this a series of outcomes associated with inequality, economic development, the environment and climate change, as well as peace and security. In contrast to the MDGs, which primarily applied to low- and middle-income countries, the ambitious agenda of the SDGs is of necessity universal; it thus applies to rich countries, as well as poor.

Report on the World Social Situation 2010
Rethinking Poverty
The 2010 issue of the Report on the World Social Situation focuses on the challenge of achieving poverty reduction. The Millennium Development Goals seek to halve, by 2015, the level of extreme poverty that existed since 1990. The Report begins with an overview of global, regional and selected country poverty trends over the period 1981-2005, critically examines the conventional policy framework and popular poverty reduction programmes, argues that a commitment to eradicating poverty and to enhancing equity and social integration requires consistent actions directed towards sustainable economic growth, productive employment creation and social development, entailing an integrated approach to economic and social policies for the benefit of all citizens. It recommends consideration of the policy approaches that have dominated the disclosure on growth and poverty thus far.
The State of Food and Agriculture 1951
Review and Outlook
This report, which not only reviews the past but also appraises the outlook for the immediate future, is as complete as can be done in the difficult circumstances of 1951. Neither crop forecasts nor economic forecasts can ever be completely right, but the appraisals here, based upon all the information available, present the best considered view of the prospects possible to make in mid-August 1951. This report is not as complete as previous ones, however, it covers the general facts of the agricultural situation and outlook sufficiently well to be of service to member nations and the general public.
