This series of publications offers a fresh and enlightening look into the history of the League of Nations involvement in social issues. The objective is to contribute to the literature on the history of international organizations and transnational history while also contributing to current dialogues on contemporary United Nations politics and policies in a way that draws upon lessons learnt from its historical predecessor.

In 1959, the Economic and Social Council paved the way for a small group of experts to meet and provide technical recommendations on standardizing geographical names at the national and international levels. This meeting gave rise to the United Nations Conferences on the Standardization of Geographical Names (UNCSGN) and to the United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names (UNGEGN). The UNCSGN is held every five years, and UNGEGN meets between the Conferences to follow up the implementation of resolutions adopted by the Conferences and to ensure continuity of activities between Conferences.

The United Nations Joint Staff Fund (UNJSPF) is a fund that provides UN pension, death, disability and the other related benefits for staff of the United Nations and the other organizations admitted to membership in the Fund. The UNJSPF is a multiple employer defined benefit plan and governed by the United Nations Joist Staff Pension Board (UNJSPB), the Staff Pension Committee for each member organization, and a secretariat to the UNJSPB and to each such committee.

The Committee on Contributions advises the General Assembly on the apportionment, under Article 17 of the Charter of the United Nations, of the expenses of the Organization among Members broadly according to capacity to pay. The Committee also advises the General Assembly on the assessments to be fixed for new Members, and on appeals by Members for a change of assessments.

The Committee on Enforced Disappearances (CED) oversees implementation of the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearances through its consideration of State reports, individual complaints, and inter-State complaints; requests for urgent action and inquiries.

Lorsqu’on entend un shérif se plaindre de perdre une source de main-d’œuvre non rémunérée, on comprend pourquoi cette réforme est absolument nécessaire. « Ils libèrent de bons éléments, ceux qui lavaient nos voitures, en changeaient l'huile, faisaient la cuisine, tout ce qui nous faisait économiser de l'argent », a commenté le shérif Steve Prator, de Caddo Parish, au sujet des délinquants non violents.
