Assessment of Development Results - Algeria
More LessThe Independent Evaluation Office of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) conducted a country level evaluation, an Assessment of Development Results (ADR) in Algeria in 2014. Assessments of Development Results (ADRs) are independent evaluations of the contribution of UNDP to the development results in the countries where it works. As a result of the terrorist attack on UNDP premises in December 2007 and its consequences, the ADR for Algeria looked at the period from 2009 to 2013, namely the last three years of the 2007-2011 cycle and the first two years of the current 2012-2014 programme cycle. Its objectives were: (i) to identify the progress made to achieve the expected results in the programme cycles in question; (ii) to analyse how UNDP Algeria is positioned, particularly in the post-terrorist attack context, to provide added value to the efforts made by the country in terms of development; (iii) to present the conclusions and the recommendations that will feed into the new programming frameworks of UNDP and the next country programme, scheduled to start in 2015.

From Corporate Social Responsibility to Corporate Sustainability
Moving the Agenda Forward in Asia and the Pacific
More LessThis publication looks at recent developments in corporate social responsibility (CSR) with particular attention to the growing role of impact investment and the need for greater convergence of global CSR instruments and provides recommendations to policymakers to enhance the adoption of CSR as an integral part of business strategy and operations. Increasingly, companies are adopting sustainable business practices as an integral element of their corporate strategies, going beyond the traditional interpretation of CSR and engage in social or impact investment and/or play active roles in development cooperation, including the provision of disaster relief and humanitarian assistance. Various global CSR instruments and sustainability frameworks, such as the Global Compact, Global Reporting Initiative and ISO 26000, have been in existence for some time and have been increasingly adopted by many companies, usually the bigger transnational corporations (TNCs).

Guidelines for the Development of a Criteria and Indicator Set for Sustainable Forest Management
More LessCriteria and indicators constitute an increasingly common policy tool to implement sustainable forest management (SFM) and to define clear priorities and targets. This should improve monitoring, reporting and assessment of key aspects of SFM performance. These guidelines provide specific concepts, definitions, tools and reference materials to guide the development process of national criteria and indicator sets for SFM. These guidelines have been developed to support the project “Accountability Systems for Sustainable Forest Management in the Caucasus and Central Asia” which is implemented through the UNECE and FAO Forestry and Timber Section and funded through the UN Development Account. The guidelines and the methods described within are used and applied for the development of national criteria and indicator sets for sustainable forest management in Armenia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan. The guidelines might be also relevant for other countries.

Legislative Texts and Treaty Provisions Concerning the Legal Status, Privileges and Immunities of International Organizations
More LessThis volume, prepared by the Division for the Development and Codification of International Law of the Legal Department of the Secretariat of the United Nations, is the tenth in the United Nations Legislative Series, a systematic collection of those national legislative texts which deal with matters of international concern and constitute evidence of the practice of States in the field of international law. The purpose of this series is to fill a gap in international documentation by gathering together materials which are at present widely scattered and often difficult of access. The preparation of such a collection has been advocated by many official and unofficial bodies, and was recommended by the International Law Commission in its report of 29 July 1950. The content of this volume concerns the regime of the high seas, one of the three topics selected by the International Law Commission for early codification.

Pathways to Sustainable Energy
Exploring Alternative Outcomes
More LessIn September 2015 countries agreed to a set of sustainable development goals. Attainment of all of the goals depends directly or indirectly on the availability of sustainable energy. Member States of the UNECE have asked how the region can attain its sustainable energy objectives. The response is complex given the diversity of the region and the range of forces and trends shaping the future. UNECE has undertaken an exploration of the factors shaping the future energy system and has developed four alternative scenarios of how the future might be. This document presents the first results of that work.

The Child Care Transition
A League Table of Early Childhood Education and Care in Economically Advanced Countries
More LessA great change is coming over childhood in the world’s richest countries. Today’s rising generation is the first in which a majority are spending a large part of early childhood in some form of out-of-home child care. At the same time, neuroscientific research is demonstrating that loving, stable, secure, and stimulating relationships with caregivers in the earliest months and years of life are critical for every aspect of a child’s development. Taken together, these two developments confront public and policymakers in countries of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) with urgent questions. Whether the child care transition will represent an advance or a setback for today’s children and tomorrow’s world, will depend on the response.

World Population Prospects
The 2010 Revision, Volume I - Comprehensive Tables
More LessThis report presents the 2010 Revision of the population estimates and projections prepared by the Population Division of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs of the United Nations Secretariat. The 2010 Revision constitutes the twenty second round of the global population estimates and projections produced by the Population Division since 1951 and it breaks new ground in the production of population projections. For the first time, projections are carried out up to 2100, instead of 2050 as previously. In order to extend the projection period to 2100, a new method for the projection of fertility was developed. The method used in the 2010 Revision is based on the advances made in projecting fertility since the 2000 Revision, advances that have been combined with a probabilistic approach to yield the future paths of fertility used in producing the medium variant of the 2010 Revision. The full results of the 2010 Revision are presented in two volumes. The first volume provides comprehensive tables displaying key demographic indicators for each development group, major area, region and country for selected periods or dates within 1950-2100. The second volume contains demographic profiles presenting time series and plots covering the period from 1950 to 2100 for selected indicators for each country with at least 100,000 inhabitants in 2010 as well as for development groups, major areas and regions.

Commodities at a Glance: Special Issue on Gum Arabic
More LessThe series “Commodities at a Glance” aims to collect, present and disseminate accurate and relevant statistical information linked to international primary commodity markets in a clear, concise and reader-friendly format. This issue of “Commodities at a Glance” explores the economic, social and environmental relevance of the gum arabic sector, with a focus on supply, demand, prices and market organization. Gum arabic is the most commercially valuable exudate gum, with wide applications in industries as diverse as food and beverages, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and printing. The gum is produced primarily in arid wooded savannas in sub-Saharan Africa, and consumed predominantly by manufacturers in developed and emerging economies. Due to its potential to generate foreign exchange reserves, ensure food security, promote sustainable agriculture and forestry, and combat desertification and climate change, gum arabic is a promising commodity for a number of African countries. However, in order to overcome the current uneven distribution of economic gains along the gum arabic value chain, producing countries must increase local processing and ensure higher compensation for resource-poor gum collectors.
