Application of the United Nations Framework Classification for Fossil Energy and Mineral Reserves and Resources 2009 to Nuclear Fuel Resources - Selected Case Studies
More LessThis publication includes eight case studies that demonstrate the classification of uranium or thorium resources at different scales, with examples in Argentina, Brazil, China, India, Malawi, Niger and the USA, to test the application of the United Nations Framework Classification for Fossil Energy and Mineral Reserves and Resources 2009 (UNFC-2009) to Nuclear Fuel Resources. UNFC-2009, which has been developed by the UNECE Expert Group on Resource Classification, is applicable to all extractive activities worldwide with work underway to broaden application to encompass renewable energy as well as injection projects for the geological storage of carbon dioxide. Guidelines, described here, were prepared for the application of UNFC-2009 to nuclear fuel resources. They will assist those responsible for finding, classifying, quantifying, financing, permitting, mining, and processing these minerals such that they are fit to enter the nuclear fuel cycle. They must be used in conjunction with the most recent release of UNFC-2009. The eight case studies demonstrate that UNFC-2009 can be applied to nuclear fuel resources and that the Bridging Document and Guidelines are both workable documents, providing a practical basis for application.

Evaluation of UNDP Contribution to Anti-Corruption and Addressing Drivers of Corruption
More LessThe Independent Evaluation Office (IEO) of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) carried out an evaluation of UNDP contribution to anti-corruption and governance integrity in a development context in 2015. The evaluation assesses UNDPs contribution to strengthening national capacities in anti-corruption and governance integrity. Handbook on Effective Prosecution Responses to Violence against Women and Girls
More LessProsecutors play a critical role in the criminal justice response to violence against women and girls. Prosecuting gender based violent crime can be challenging. Often there are a number of challenges, due to the private nature of the offence, and police investigation may be substandard. Victims may be uncooperative, withdraw or recant their complaints. Judges or juries may employ gender bias or common myths surrounding violence against women and girls when examining the credibility of the victim and the facts of the case. Drawing upon the updated Model Strategies and Practical Measures on the Elimination of Violence against Women in the Field of Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (General Assembly resolution 65/228, annex), UNODC and UN Women have drafted the Handbook on Effective Prosecution Responses to Violence against Women and Girls. Recognizing that prosecutors work in different legal systems, it is meant to be a helpful resource for individual prosecutors and prosecution services.

Inclusive Social Protection in Latin America
A Comprehensive, Rights-based Approach
More LessThis publication examines the main debates under way on social protection and co-responsibility transfer programmes. It identifies the role played by these programmes and considers the conceptual elements, needs and the challenges that will have to be overcome to consolidate comprehensive social protection systems in Latin America. The authors argue that these should be solidarity-based systems that provide universal coverage and are essentially egalitarian in the guarantees established as citizens' rights. Citizenship as a whole is thus becoming part of protection policies as the region moves towards all-encompassing social policies that combine the complementary principles of targeting as the instrument and universality as the end.

Investment Policy Review - Botswana
More LessForeign Direct Investment (FDI) has been the driving force in moving the economy of Botswana from that of a least developed country status to one of a middle-income country. The country aims to continue this rapid growth while at the same time diversifying its economy. This paper reveals how the government plans to develop national business development through citizen empowerment, while at the same continuing to seize opportunities to attract FDI. The following topics are covered in this report: Botswana's track record in attracting FDI, the investment framework for FDI in Botswana, the impact of FDI on Botswana's national development objectives, and proposed recommendations and conclusions with regard to FDI policy in that country.

Principles and Recommendations for Population and Housing Censuses, Revision 3
More LessSince its early years, the United Nations has issued a series of international recommendations on population and housing censuses under the title “Principles and Recommendations for Population and Housing Censuses”. These publication series, which are based on good national practices in census taking, are widely used by national statistical offices and census officials in countries throughout the world in planning and carrying out population and housing censuses, as well as other related data collection activities, particularly demographic and and socio-economic surveys. The recommendations provide guidance on the main characteristics of population and housing censuses, general material on census methodology, planning, and operations, and more detailed guidance on the content of censuses, in terms of topics for population and also housing. These series are currently revised to assist countries in preparing for the 2020 round of censuses by taking into account changes in methodology, technology, as well as the need for better data dissemination and utilization.

Responsible Business and Sustainable Investment in the Natural Resources Sector in Asia and the Pacific
More LessNatural resources represent a large share of FDI inflows to the Asia-Pacific region. Covered in this study are oil, gas, mining, hydropower, and large tract plantations such as palm oil and rubber (but not agriculture). These sectors share a number of common features relating both to the nature and the social and environmental impacts of FDI. Growing worldwide demand for these finite resources has made them increasingly attractive investment opportunities. Over the past few years, ESCAP has been actively working to support increased implementation of more inclusive and sustainable business practices in the Asia and Pacific region. This study builds on this work by providing a review of the issues, challenges, instruments and tools related to responsible business and sustainable FDI in the natural resources sector in the Asia-Pacific region. The ultimate objective of the study is to promote FDI that brings a satisfactory return on investment for the business or investor and a positive social return on investment for the host country whilst ensuring environmental sustainability.

World Population Prospects
The 2010 Revision, Volume II - Demographic Profiles
More LessThis report presents the 2010 Revision of the population estimates and projections prepared by the Population Division of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs of the United Nations Secretariat. The 2010 Revision constitutes the twenty second round of the global population estimates and projections produced by the Population Division since 1951 and it breaks new ground in the production of population projections. For the first time, projections are carried out up to 2100, instead of 2050 as previously. In order to extend the projection period to 2100, a new method for the projection of fertility was developed. The full results of the 2010 Revision are presented in two volumes. The first volume provides comprehensive tables displaying key demographic indicators for each development group, major area, region and country for selected periods or dates within 1950-2100. The second volume contains demographic profiles presenting time series and plots covering the period from 1950 to 2100 for selected indicators for each country with at least 100,000 inhabitants in 2010 as well as for development groups, major areas and regions.

Effects of the Quarantines and Activity Restrictions Related to the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) on Air Quality in Latin America’s Cities
More LessAir pollution represents a major environmental health hazard. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), it is responsible for 300,000 deaths every year in the Americas, and 9 in every 10 people are breathing polluted air at this very moment. The air pollutants that are most harmful to human and environmental health are coarse particulate matter (PM10) and fine particulate matter (PM2.5), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and sulfur dioxide (SO2). The concentrations of these pollutants in city air are then determined by the environmental conditions prevailing in each case. As multiple factors are in play, it is impossible to attribute any reduction in concentrations exclusively to the activity restrictions and quarantines imposed to deal with the current COVID-19 pandemic. The measures adopted by the region’s national or local governments to limit the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic include quarantines, lockdown orders and the reduction or cessation of economic activities, which have impacted production levels and human mobility. As there is also anecdotal evidence that air quality has improved, this document presents the results of a statistical investigation into the concentrations of these three key pollutants in selected cities3 of the region that are home to about 14% of Latin America’s urban population: Bogotá, Lima, Mexico City, Monterrey (Mexico), Quito, Santiago and São Paulo (Brazil) to determine whether the measures deployed have in fact contributed to better air quality.
