The long-standing stalemate in the United Nations disarmament machinery showed no signs of easing as the year 2012 unfolded, despite appeals for progress from the United Nations Secretary-General and other high-ranking officials. The continuing stalemate further deepened persistent pessimism over the future of the disarmament machinery existing since the first special session of the General Assembly devoted to disarmament in 1978.
