Review of Developments in Transport in Asia and the Pacific
The Review of Developments in Transport in Asia and the Pacific is a biennial publication of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP). This year the Review focuses on trend and development relating to the following areas: railways; roads and highways; maritime ports and developments in shipping; dry ports, intermodal terminals and logistics development; facilitating transport across borders; and safe and sustainable transport.

Transition Towards Sustainable Transport Solutions
Sustainable Trasport is critical for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through enhancing accessibility to essential services and facilities and reducing inequalities, supporting industry, innovation and connectivity, including associated supply chain networks and cross-border freight transport, which will also lead to higher levels of efficiency in the system, especially with the deployment of information and communication technology and real-time data sharing across a supply chain in the long term. By reducing greenhouse gas emission and air pollution through low carbon technologies, mode shifts, alternative fuels, and route optimization, sustainable passenger and freight transport can mitigate climate change impact, while improving public health at the same time. additionally, improved public transport systems serve as a core function of sustainable cities, while minimizing resource use and remains uneven across countries. the "Review of Developments in Transport in Asia and the Pacific 2024: Transition Towards Sustainable Transport Solutions" examine progress made in seven transport areas, regional land transport connectivity; maritime connectivity; transport digitalization; low carbon mobility; urban transport; road safety and inclusive transport. it highlights sustainable transport solutions and provides policy insights to support SDG achievement in Asia and the Pacific, helping policymakers, transport planners and researchers understand current sustainability levels, gaps, trends, and required actions for sustainable transport development in the region.

Towards Sustainable, Inclusive and Resilient Urban Passenger Transport in Asian Cities
The publication focuses on greening urban passenger transport systems in Asia and the Pacific region. It will review existing state of public transport systems and assess the environmental sustainability and inclusiveness of passenger transport. In the context of COVID-19, it will also includes an analysis of impacts of COVID-19 on urban mobility with cases form Asian cities. By analyzing anticipated growth of passengers, energy use and emissions, and the state of infrastructure and operation of passenger transport systems, the publication make policy recommendations to improve overall sustainability, inclusiveness and resilience of urban passenger transport systems in Asia. Use of technology and innovations, promotion of active mobility and integration urban and transport planning, and regional cooperation are some of policies and actions suggested. The publication provides sufficient insight into the measures and policies, as well as ESCAP interventions, towards achieving environmental sustainability and inclusiveness of passenger transport in the region, while building back better from the COVID-19 crisis.

Sustainable Freight Transport
Within the transport sector in Asia and the Pacific freight and logistics account for a significant portion of total energy use – in many countries upward of 40% – and a correspondingly large share of CO2 emissions. Furthermore, on account of economic development and population growth, the region is expected to face substantial increases in trade shares and, thus, freight volumes. Accordingly, some estimates suggest that in Asia, ton-kilometres from surface freight will increase by 261% from 2015 to 2050 accounting for over two-thirds of all surface freight globally. Against this background, the Review provides a data-supported overview and insight for policy makers towards accomplishing seamless intermodal freight transport connectivity across key economic, social and environmental dimensions.
Review of Developments in Transport in Asia and the Pacific 2017
ThIs review discusses the key contribution of transport to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals in Asia and the Pacific. It looks at emerging trends in transport in the region and presents initiatives that are making transport systems cleaner, safer, more efficient, and more affordable. It provides an update on the status of the Asian Highway and Trans-Asian Railway networks, seaports, airports as well as progress in the development of intermodal linkages such as dry ports. It describes regional strategies and mechanisms to facilitate regional transport operational connectivity. The Review reports on the initiatives of the cities of the region to stem the social and economic losses from increasing congestion and pollution. It acknowledges the increasing role of intelligent transport systems for urban and intercity mobility and recognizes the role of rural accessibility It also reports the region’s greater interest and the need in further improving road safety.
