Around 1994, approximately three fourths of all households in Latin America were composed of nuclear families. Although this figure gives the impression that the make-up of Latin American families is quite homogeneous, these family units may he differentiated by the gender of the head of household and by the stage reached in the family life cycle, since these factors give rise to differing degrees of access to a given level of well-being and point up the need for a new policy approach.
