Reduce child mortality

The mortality rate for children under the age of five has dropped by more than a third from 89 deaths per 1,000 live births in 1990 to 60 per 1,000 in 2009.23 But the poorest children are not always benefitting from this progress and are significantly less likely to survive than their richer counterparts in all regions of the developing world (see Figure 5.7).
