Acknowledgements

This volume results from a joint research project initiated and implemented by El Colegio de México, the United Nations University (UNU) and Oxford University’s Centre for International Studies. Participants were invited to present papers at a two-day conference on “The Human Rights Regime in the Americas: Theory and Practice”, held at El Colegio de México in March 2006. This brought together a diverse group of scholars and practitioners, including judges and prominent members of both national and regional human rights commissions. The project benefited greatly from this unique group, whose deep expertise and rich variety of experiences from their various countries are, we believe, strongly reflected in the volume.
