Establishing a complete picture of the current and future supply base of fossil energy and minerals is necessary for effective resource management. Accurate and consistent estimates of fossil energy and mineral reserves and resources, coherent with other scientific and social/ economic information, are the foundation for such assessments. A number of different standards have evolved over time in response to local or industry-specific requirements, but we are now called to serve the needs of a globalized economy. As a result, there has been growing interest in reexpressing earlier work in the form of common and universally-applicable standards.
