International Maritime Organization (IMO)

In 1992, several legal instruments adopted under the auspices of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) entered into force. The Convention for the Suppression of Unlawful Acts against the Safety of Maritime Navigation and a Protocol for the Suppression of Unlawful Acts against the Safety of the Fixed Platforms Located on the Continental Shelf, adopted in 1988, entered into force on 1 March. Amendments to the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships, 1973, as modified by the 1978 Protocol (MARPOL 73/78) entered into force, as did amendments to the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea, 1974 (SOLAS Convention).
