Historical development of public diplomacy

Having looked at definitions of public diplomacy, and of related activities, in this chapter we shall consider public diplomacy from a historical perspective. Much of the recent material derives, inevitably, from American experience, since the United States has been in the forefront of public diplomacy developments. However, as we shall see, the origins of public diplomacy long pre-date the existence of the United States.
