Abstract

Following the recognition by a number of scientists in 1982 that a major nuclear war might have grave climatic effects with global implications, the General Assembly, by resolution 40/152 G of 16 December 1985, requested the Secretary-General to carry out a study on the climatic and potential physical effects of nuclear war, including nuclear winter, which would also examine its socio-economic consequences.
