In 1988, the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) continued to provide concessional assistance to finance agricultural projects in low-income, food-deficit countries. The Fund, aimed at increasing food production, reducing malnutrition and alleviating rural poverty, concentrated on the poorest farmers, providing them with the necessary production means and institutional support. Particular attention was given to restoring agricultural development capacity to sub-Saharan countries. IFAD also focused on women in development, cooperation with non-governmental organizations (NGOS) and the environment.
