Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)

The Council of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), meeting at Rome, Italy, in November 1978, reviewed the world food and agricultural situation, and warned that, despite the record world cereal harvest in 1978, there were no grounds for complacency. It noted that very little progress had been made in relation to the fundamental longer-term goals of development. During the first eight years of the Second United Nations Development Decade (the 1970s), the average increase in the food and agricultural production of the developing countries had been less than 3 per cent a year, which was below the target of 4 per cent set by the International Development Strategy.
