International tribunals

In 1999, the judicial activities of the International Tribunal for the Prosecution of Persons Responsible for Serious Violations of International Humanitarian Law Committed in the Territory of the Former Yugoslavia since 1991 (ICTY) reached an unprecedented level, with events in the Kosovo province of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY) dominating the work of the Office of the Prosecutor. On 22 May, Slobodan Milosevic, the President of FRY, and four others were indicted for crimes against humanity in Kosovo. A third Trial Chamber became operational during the year, and all three Trial Chambers and the Appeals Chamber were seized of cases.
