Primary chemicals used in illegal manufacture of methamphetamine are typically illegally imported or diverted from licit use (Figure 3). Methamphetamine is considered a synthetic drug, though when the starting ephedrine comes from plants, in this case ephedra, it could be considered a semi-synthetic drug. However, unlike heroin which requires opium poppy, methamphetamine can be manufactured entirely from chemical inputs.
