What are the conditions for the transition from QS-9000 to ISO/TS 16949?

Automotive suppliers are becoming aware that the quality management system (QMS) requirements document QS-9000 will be suspended when the ISO/TS 16949:2002 comes into force in 2003. Tier 1 automotive suppliers are making the transition from QS-9000 to ISO/TS 16949:2002. The new registration is intended to streamline the registration and audit process. It does not replace QS-9000 but it is recognized as a harmonizing agent for companies faced with upgrading to the ISO 9001:2000 standard by December 2003. However, the issue remains whether and when an automotive supplier should consider making the switch from QS-9000 to ISO/TS 16949:2002. The challenge for QS-9000 registered companies will be to implement within their organizations methodologies to help them become more ‘customer and process focused’.
