This publication was conceived in 1948 as a collection of international awards or decisions rendered between States, including cases involving espousing or respondent Governments on behalf of individual claimants. The present volume reproduces the awards in two arbitrations, namely, the case between the Republic of Ecuador and the United States of America, and the Railway Land Arbitration between Malaysia and Singapore, respectively. It also reproduces the outcome of the Timor Sea Conciliation, involving Timor-Leste and Australia.

This report examines the role of economic and social policies in understanding the evolution of inequality and poverty in Malawi over the past three decades. Emphasizing the centrality of policy choices in addressing inequality, the report indicates that most of the key policies that Malawi has been implementing have contributed to reducing income inequality. However, their efficacy is being eroded by several factors including policy incoherence and infrastructure gaps.

The Global Annual Meeting of Gender Focal Points and Focal Points for Women brings the 400-strong, UN Women-led network of gender focal points together to support their ongoing work to enhance gender parity and create an enabling environmentat work. This report provides a summary of the 2020 meeting of 163 participants, in which upcoming challenges and changes to gender parity are discussed within the present- and post-COVID-19 contexts. Presenting key conclusions and best practices, the report explores, among other topics, the role of innovative ideas and improved talent acquisition, the future of work, and the effect of lockdown on the “shadow pandemic” of gender-based violence, further considering the implications of such topics on the work of gender focal points.

The paper examines the distribution of refugees from Ukraine across countries of Lithuania, analyses the unemployment rates in Lithuania by gender, and explores how online job advertisements in Lithuania may or may not be accommodating to refugees from Ukraine. The authors reflect on policymaking efforts that would accommodate both local and refugee populations in the labour market.

The document is an update to second edition published unofficially in 2023. These guidelines aim to provide cities in the ECE region with a practical and action-oriented framework for developing Voluntary Local Reviews. They are designed to better support cities in tracking their progress towards achieving the SDGs.

With energy demand in Asia and the Pacific forecast to increase by 60 per cent from 2010 to 2035, access to reliable and adequate energy services will remain a focus for decades to come. Countries in the region need to maximize their potential, improve energy access, increase shares of renewable energy, promote energy efficiency and strengthen cooperation on energy security and connectivity. The 2016 Report supports the implementation of the SDG7 and consists of two parts. Part I (Chapter 2) provides an overview of the implementation of areas of action. Part II (Chapters 3, 4, 5 and 6) discusses emerging energy issues in the global market and Asia-Pacific region.

Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG 7) targets universal access to energy, an increased share of renewable energy in the global energy mix, and doubling the rate of energy efficiency improvement. While the Asia-Pacific region has made considerable progress in meeting SDG 7 targets, much more work needs to be done if the region is to achieve the 2030 Agenda. Deployment of renewable energy and complementary technologies like energy efficiency, battery storage and, in particular, grids must increase significantly if the SDG 7 targets are to be met. However, there are many positive signs that suggest the transition to clean energy is accelerating. Renewable energy is more cost-competitive than ever, especially compared with the relatively high cost of oil, natural gas and coal, and these technologies are increasingly being recognized as contributors to energy security. The focus of this Regional Trends Report 2022 is on one strategy that can enable a more rapid, more secure and more affordable transition to clean energy, i.e., power system connectivity. Energy connectivity supports the integration of variable renewables, and enables access to a more diverse and lower cost set of resources. This strategy is widely recognized, including by ESCAP member States, which in 2021 endorsed the “Regional Road Map on Power System Connectivity”. The vision, principles and nine strategies detailed in that document have guided the development of this report. Accelerating progress on power system connectivity can, in turn, accelerate the energy transition. ESCAP will continue to work with stakeholders in the region and its member States to implement the Road Map strategies, and enable more secure, more efficient and more sustainable connectivity in the region. This report will provide a useful set of case studies and recommendations for enhancing policies in support of power system connectivity and the energy transition.

The 2025 Regional Trends Report on Energy for Sustainable Development: Transforming Energy Systems for a Low Carbon Future in Asia and the Pacific offers an extensive analysis of the region’s progress and challenges in moving towards a low carbon energy future. It examines, in detail, the region’s progress in achieving Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy) and in advancing the just energy transition. Despite significant progress in electricity access across nearly all countries in the region and with many national examples of accelerated renewable energy deployment, challenges exist, particularly in achieving universal access to clean cooking and improving energy efficiency. A just, equitable and inclusive transition necessitates accelerated action by governments, substantial investments and enhanced regional collaboration. To support the realization of a low-carbon future, the recommendations of this report are aligned with the outcomes of COP28, where countries committed to tripling renewable energy capacity and doubling energy efficiency improvement rates by 2030. The Asia-Pacific region plays a critical role in achieving these global targets, as it is home to over 4.3 billion people and consumes more than half of the world’s energy.

Migration is a regular feature of life in the Horn of Africa. It takes multiple forms and is driven by numerous factors, including personal aspirations, economic exclusion and forced displacement as a consequence of inter-ethnic communal violence or natural disasters. As part of a regional research series and based specifically on 418 quantitative interviews carried out in 2019, with children and young people in Somaliland and Puntland, this report provides a deeper understanding of their perceptions and feelings around safety, well-being and their protective environments. It also provides a snapshot of their access to services and resources, and their trust in authorities and other service providers. The report concludes by offering policy and programme recommendations that can help rethink child protection approaches for migrant children and young people.

The 30th Anniversary 2020 Human Development Report is the latest in the series of global Human Development Reports published by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) since 1990 as independent and analytically and empirically grounded discussions of major development issues, trends and policies. This report offers a thought-provoking, necessary alternative to paralysis in the face of alarming planetary change. Its release comes as the COVID-19 (coronarvirus) pandemic simultaneously offers a glimpse of what a ‘new normal’ could hold and opens up the opportunity for humanity to change course. The report also sets out new metrics of human development to guide us, including a new, experimental Planetary pressures-adjusted Human Development Index.
