Ever since the launching of the first man-made satellite into outer space in 1957, the United Nations has been involved in and deeply committed to the question of the peaceful uses of outer space. For almost three decades, outer space questions have been actively discussed in various forums of the United Nations, particularly in the General Assembly and in the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space and its subsidiary bodies. Such deliberations have contributed to the conclusion of several important international instruments concerning both military and peaceful aspects of the use of outer space.
