Introductory essay: What future for science?

The past century has been such a triumph for scientific discovery and technological innovation that it is tempting to believe we already know most of what there is to know of the world around us. The general principles on which the world works are understood, the argument goes; there are no further radical discoveries to be made - what remains is merely the more detailed description of the world we live in. This belief is an illusion, if (in part) a pardonable illusion.
