Institutional and administrative matters

In 2001, the United Nations addressed a number of institutional and administrative matters to ensure its efficient functioning. The General Assembly commenced its fifty-sixth session on 12 September. Earlier in the year, the Assembly resumed its fifty-fifth session, convened its twentyfifth (6-9 June) and twenty-sixth (25-27 June) special sessions and resumed its tenth emergency special session. The Assembly granted observer status to the International Development Law Institute, the International Hydrographic Organization and the Community of Sahelo-Saharan States. It also adopted a number of measures to improve its efficiency.
