During 1995, the United Nations continued to broaden its work in the area of statistics, with special emphasis on strengthening international cooperation. At its February/March session, the Statistical Commission gave specific guidance on priorities for work to the inter-agency task forces it had established in 1993 in the following areas: national accounts, industrial and construction statistics, international trade statistics, finance statistics, price statistics, service statistics, environment statistics and the measurement of poverty. Other main issues considered in 1995 by the 24-member body, which normally meets biennially, included: demographic, social and migration statistics, including preparations for the World Population and Housing Census Programme for the year 2000; development of economic classifications; technical cooperation in statistics; and a new agenda item "Critical problems in economic statistics", which included matters related to production and dissemination of statistical information. The Commission also commemorated the fiftieth anniversary of international statistical work in the UN system.
