Spatial areas are at the heart of ecosystem accounting. The conceptual model of the SEEA EA delineates areas within a country or region into contiguous, mutually exclusive (tessellated) units, each covered by a specific ecosystem, i.e. dynamic complex of plant, animal and micro-organism communities and their non-living environment interacting as a functional unit (CBD, 1992, Article 2, Use of Terms).
