Angola’s graduation from the least developed countries category hinges on it reversing the economic meltdown experienced since 2016. Its vulnerability to oil price fluctuations coupled with a weak structural base have grounded the export-dependent economy, and have severely damaged the prospects of the country graduating on income-only criterion. The year 2022 is a critical juncture for the country as it attempts to reverse a long-running recession, while at the same time battling the COVID-19 pandemic and its lingering consequences. The significance of the recovery is not just for the graduation purpose scheduled for 2024 according to the new timeline, but also because of the devastated state of the economy from the recession, and the risk of falling into a slow growth path despite commodity successes experienced in 2006–2015.
