Environmental information and public participation

Over the past decade, environmental monitoring in Azerbaijan has been reduced in the face of severe economic conditions. However, in the last two years the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources has taken measures to improve the situation. It is making efforts to maintain monitoring in key areas such as air and water quality, and pollution of the Caspian Sea. Azerbaijan is consolidating environmental monitoring by improving data exchange, processing, publication and storage. Significant work remains, however, including the replacement of ageing equipment for sampling and measurement, and the further development of a coordinated national network. Regulations on environmental monitoring have recently been submitted to the Cabinet of Ministers for approval.
