The performance of the least developed countries (LDCs) in terms of economic growth has been weaker by a full two percentage points in the past five years (20092013) than during the previous boom period (20022008). It has also been below the target rate of 7-per-cent annual growth established in the Istanbul Programme of Action (IPoA) for the Least Developed Countries for the Decade 20112020. This chapter analyses recent macroeconomic trends in the LDCs and assesses some of the factors behind their weaker performance.
