Human development and social justice

Advancing economic growth has been at the centre of public policy since the establishment of the gross national product (GNP) measurement. Although designed to measure economic progress only, it was also used as an indicator of general well-being until 1990. The limited application of economic growth to human lives was revealed by the human development concept and its associated human development index (HDI). The HDI is a summary of achievements in health, education and income, where the latter is seen as a means rather than as an end in itself. The concept of human development is broader than the HDI and encompasses crucial aspects of human life, such as dignity, freedom, equity, sustainability, and opportunities, all of which are absent in GNP.
