Food production constitutes a large part of the economic activities in most countries of the region, the exceptions being Japan (industrialized), Hong Kong and Singapore ( entrepôts) , and Malaya (specializing in raw material production). In all but the latter countries, agriculture is responsible for 40—65 per cent of the national income and over 80 per cent of the cultivated land is devoted to the production of food.
