This review presents the analysis of national environmental legislation from all 193 UN Member States. The review sought to answer: To what extent does the environmental legislation of the 193 Member States of the United Nations criminalize actions that harm the environment? How are any such criminal offences penalized, and does this conform to the definition of serious crime set out in the UNTOC? The review analysed 2,502 pieces of environmental legislation in 193 countries, looking for provisions pertaining to criminal offences related to deforestation and logging, mining, air pollution, noise pollution, soil pollution, water pollution, fishing, waste, and wildlife, as defined in Box 2.
