In September 2015, the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda to promote inclusive and sustainable economic development. Innovation can make an important contribution towards advancing this objective, as it drives productivity growth, conserves scarce resources and enables sustainable production and consumption patterns.2 Beyond that, achieving most, if not all, of the sustainable development goals will require massive investments in innovation.
