Data sources and data compilation methods

To produce the required data outputs, a statistical office collects and transforms basic data from the institutional units—corporations, government units, households and non-profit institutions serving households—in their roles as producers, consumers and investors, income earners, etc. There are two basic mechanisms for collecting economic data: (a) securing access to data already being collected for administrative purposes and (b) direct survey by the statistical office. In either case, however, the original providers of the data are the same, namely, the institutional units, and the original sources of the data are the same, namely, the records kept by these units.
