The three pillars of development – social, economic and environmental – form a nexus. In order for this nexus to be sustainable, a more equitable distribution of resources and a move towards a green economy with sustainable consumption and production patterns are essential. To achieve this, development policies, including policies addressing water scarcity, should give due consideration to all three pillars of sustainable development. This approach was promulgated for the first time by the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development held in 1992.
