In 2005, foreign direct investment (FDI) in Latin America and the Caribbean (excluding financial centres) amounted to over USS 68 billion, which means the level of inflows was 11% higher than the previous year. The region saw a decline in its share of worldwide flows and those directed at developing countries, however. In terms of companies, an overview of the 500 largest enterprises in the region continues to show the trends seen in previous years: transnational corporations losing ground to local companies. This chapter analyses the current situation in terms of FDI inflows and the presence of transnational corporations (TNCs) in the region.
