One of the most crucial problems which ESCAP developing countries are facing comprises unemployment and underemployment. The region’s rapid increase in population, which is continually placing additional labour on existing labour markets, is attributable primarily to high fertility rates. Declines in mortality rates have also contributed to the population explosion. Most ESCAP developing countries have failed to absorb the growing labour supply, with the result that unemployment and underemployment are now widespread.
