The majority of the world’s transboundary rivers, lakes and aquifers are shared between two or more riparian states. The status of transboundary water cooperation can vary greatly between shared watercourses and aquifers. The introduction of a reporting mechanism under the Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes (Water Convention) and the Sustainable Development Goals framework (specifically SDG indicator 6.5.2) therefore marks an important step in the support of transboundary water cooperation. The aim is to assist countries to improve cooperation with their neighbours on shared water resources.
