The recent economic situation in Venezuela has been influenced by the implementation in April 1996 of an adjustment programme known as "Agenda Venezuela", which was based on the lifting of price and exchange rate controls and aimed to reduce the fiscal deficit. The programme, which had the financial backing of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), was launched during a boom in the petroleum market, and generally speaking delivered the expected results, curbing inflation and easing pressures on the external accounts.
